New York ranks overall number 16 in the nation with the total number of NBCTs in the state. This is figured by the number of National Board Certified Teachers who hold a valid certificate through the Maintenance of Certification process or the Initial process comprised of four Components.

What are the benefits of being an NBCT in NY?
New York NBCT Financial Incentives
New York teachers who hold a valid NBCT certificate and are working withing the New York State United Teachers (NYSUT) are eligible for financial incentives. 265 districts within the state of NY negotiated these incentives and recognize National Board Certification. Incentives include stipends for achievement, step increases to salary, and release time.
State Recognition
New York is one of the states that recognizes National Board Certification. This can be used as a pathway to New York state certification for most comparable state teaching certificates, with the exceptions of special education.
Additionally, New York State Education Department's regulations allowing Continuing Teacher and Leader Education requirements in a five-year cycle to be fulfilled by engaging in the National Board Certification Process. Another five-year cycle can be fulfilled when achieving board certification.
Educational Credits
Many universities throughout the nation offer graduate credit to teachers pursuing National Board Certification. Be sure to check with your local New York university to see if this is a possibility.
Additionally, the National Board Council of New York and the NYSUT's Education and Learning Trust have partnered with Empire State College to provide three graduate credits for each component, thus culminating in 12 units.
