Massachusetts is ranked number 31 in the nation for National Board Certified teachers. It is important to note that this number includes the number of teachers who initially certify as well as renewal for Maintenance of Certifications.

What are the benefits of being an NBCT in MA?

Massachusetts NBCT Financial Incentives                 

Some local school districts may offer stipends for National Board Certification, however the state does not provide a monetary increase. Be sure to check with you local administration or district to find out if they offer a financial incentive.

State Recognition    

Recently, Massachusetts Department of Elementary and and Secondary Education has incorporated National Board Certification into recertification regulations. Currently, teachers who achieve NB Certification are awarded 120 PDP's, which is good for one round of recertification. This has also been recently added to the license regulations and is one of the options for the Professional license in Massachusetts. Educational Credits               

Some universities may provide graduate credits to teachers to complete the National Board Certification. Be sure to reach out to your local university in Massachusetts to see if graduate credit is a possibility for your you.

NBPTS Support Options

Support options can be found in many places for National Board. Many teachers take advantage of online offerings, including Tracey Bryant Stuckey's NBCT Professional Development for Initial or Maintenance of Certification (MOC). For Initial NBPTS Certification Tracey offers Component 3 and Component 4 programs and for MOC candidates, Renew Like a Pro. By the end of each of these step-by-step programs, teachers will successfully produce a finalized portfolio for National Board. Be sure that if an online program or cohort is not right for you, to reach out to your district or find another person in your district going through the process or has already been through the process.
