Your Teaching is Worth Seeing.
Let's Make Sure Your Video
Shows it.
Component 3 can make even an experienced teacher second-guess everything: Which lesson should I film? Where should I put the camera? What if the class doesn't go as planned? And how do I write about what the video shows?
The National Board Component 3 course gives you a clear path from planning, and recording to selecting your time stamps and writing your commentary.
The Video Shows Your Practice.
Your Writing Explains Your Decisions.
National Board Component 3, Teaching Practice and Learning Environment, is where you show student-centered learning in action.
Your classroom video and written commentary show:
- How You Plan for & Teach The Students in Front of You.
- How Equity & Diversity are Seen & Valued in Your Planning & Teaching.
- How Student Feedback Shapes Your Next Move.
You already do this every day. NBPTS Component 3 asks you to make it visible.
Requirements vary by certificate area, so candidates should check the current National Board certification Component 3 instructions at the NBPTS Candidate Center before recording.
WHAT THE COMPONENT 3
VIDEO CAN SHOW
Your interactions, instruction, and learning environment, feedback for students, equity/fairness/diversity, and how learning to goals is happening in your classroom.
WHAT YOUR COMPONENT 3
WRITING HELPS EXPLAIN
Why you made your choices, the significance of your choices, what you learned about your teaching and students' learning, and your next steps.
Take a Look Inside the Component 3 Course
Recording your classroom is only the beginning. The real work is noticing what happened how students responded, what choices you made and what those moments reveal about learning.
In this walkthrough, you'll see how everyday classroom moments can become clear, meaningful C3 evidence.

From “What Should I Film?” to Writing You Can Stand Behind
Plan Lessons Worth Recording
Use the rubric-aligned AAT lesson plan to map what students will be doing and which teaching choices you want the assessor to see.
Prepare to Film
Set up so the assessor can see and hear you and your students throughout the lesson.
Review & Choose Your Videos
Choose clips for their analytical and reflective value, not because the lesson felt good.
Analyze & Reflect
Connect your claims to moments the assessor can observe, then explain your next steps and why they matter.
You Don't Need a Classroom That Looks Perfect on Camera
Most candidates think these things before they hit record. Few say them out loud.
- "What if a student gives the wrong answer?"
- "What if I stumble over my words?"
- "What if the best teaching moment happens outside the 15 minutes, or outside the frame?"
- "How will I know whether the video is strong enough?"
Those questions mean you care about doing this well.
National Board Component 3 isn't looking for a flawless lesson. It's looking for real teaching, planned with intention and examined honestly. A wrong answer can show how you respond to student thinking. A pause can show how you give students time. What matters is that you planned with your students in mind, captured the lesson as it actually happened, and can look at the evidence and say what it shows.
That's the work inside this course: plan intentionally using the NBPTS standards & rubric, film authentically, and look closely at what the video really shows.
No course can promise that a particular video will score well. What we can do is help you choose and analyze with clear eyes toward the rubric.

Guidance From a Teacher Who Has Been on Both Sides of the Portfolio
I'm Tracey Bryant Stuckey, a National Board Certified Teacher, former NBPTS assessor, NBPTS Component 3 coach and classroom teacher. I've been on the assessor's side of the portfolio, and I've coached candidates through it, so I know what assessors look for and how it feels to be the one on camera.
I know how vulnerable it can feel to watch yourself teach.
My goal is to help you look past the nerves, study the evidence in front of you, and explain the teaching decisions behind it.
